Allan Legere is a Canadian serial killer and arsonist. He is infamously known as the "Monster of the Miramichi" for a series of brutal crimes committed in the Miramichi region of New Brunswick in 1989.
Legere escaped from custody while serving time for robbery in May 1989. During his time at large, he committed four murders, multiple arsons, and several sexual assaults. His crimes terrorized the local community, and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) launched a massive manhunt to apprehend him.
He was eventually recaptured in November 1989. Initially, he was convicted of only robbery. However, after advances in DNA technology, specifically DNA fingerprinting, linked him to the murders, he was re-tried and convicted on four counts of first-degree murder in 1991. This made him one of the first individuals in Canada to be convicted based on DNA evidence.
Legere's trial and convictions brought significant attention to the developing field of forensic DNA analysis. He remains incarcerated and is considered one of Canada's most notorious criminals. His crimes led to increased security measures in correctional facilities and heightened awareness of the potential for DNA evidence in criminal investigations.
